I got to thinking today about Easter, the reasons for celebration, and the what the fam and I will be doing to celebrate. One thought lead to another and I started thinking about food and sacrifice.
It has occurred to me that when God expressed through the law what kind of sacrifices He would accept (perfect without spot or wrinkle), He was not so much making a statement about what He rejects (though that is implied), but rather, He was making a commentary on the proactive goodness He seeks. You see, the issue isn't about Him being too good for an imperfect sacrifice but rather His insistence that we produce ever increasing better quality with our endeavors. That, if we are going to raise livestock, for instance, we ought to do so humanely and with the intent to strive for perfection. Perfection can not be done without full blown intentionality and care. In considering the CAFO method and paradigm, I would dare say that not one acceptable animal is produced that is appropriate for sacrifice according to God's law. Basically what I am saying is that God's law isn't really about severity of punishments, or identifying what puts one on God's bad side. It is about driving us to be our best which is good news for the world around us.
